EWS.1 '18 PAIN
IN THE DUST
EWS CHILE

THE ROCK-STREWN TRAILS OF THE HIGH DESERT PRESENTED THE BIGGEST FOE FOR EACH COMPETITOR. FINDING THE BALANCE OF PUSHING IT HARD, BUT AVOIDING A PUNCTURE OR A MAJOR MECHANICAL WAS MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY EXHAUSTING THROUGH THE SIX STAGES OF RACING.
The 2018 Enduro World Series kicked off in the dust and piercing rocks of the Chilean desert. It was a welcome change from the rain and mud that permeated most races last season, but the dry terrain created its own savagery. Joining former EWS Champ Richie Rude in the opening round were Yeti / Fox team riders Shawn Neer, Jubal Davis and U21 rider Duncan Nason. The rock-strewn trails of the high desert presented the biggest foe for each competitor. Finding the balance of pushing it hard, but avoiding a puncture or a major mechanical was mentally and physically exhausting through the six stages of racing.
Looking for redemption after relinquishing his EWS crown last season, Richie came out on a tear taking victory in Stage 1. He added another win in Stage 3 and 2nd in Stage 6, but a soul-crushing puncture on the 11km Stage 2 created a time deficit too large to overcome. Richie was quick to point out that he was undaunted, riding the 20min stage and 90min climb with a flat. It is clear that Richie is back on form this year and will be his usual force of reckoning on course.
While Richie faced disappointment in Stage 2, it was sheer delight for teammate Shawn Neer. He captured 6th place, on the longest EWS stage ever raced. The fine dust filtered out by his stache and a full off-season of training had Shawn riding fast. He was on point all weekend, taking 10th place overall. Yeah! Duncan Nason did the Yeti colors proud and won the U21 class, flying his turquoise and yellow atop the box. We have high hopes for Duncan this season. Jubal Davis raced consistently through all stages, placing 35th overall. He has the track speed and talent to be a top 20 rider, so don’t be surprised if you see him crack into the elite ranks this year. The team is off to Columbia for the next round.
